Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 2: Enter The Dubstep

Frank Radio and iHipHop Distribution are proud to announce the highly anticipated follow-up to 2005's "Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 1." On November 10th, the newest and freshest sounds in underground electronic music encounter the grimiest and most hardcore hip-hop click in this one-of-a-kind album: "Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 2: Enter The Dubstep."

As Vol. 1 sought to introduce hip-hop fans in general, and specifically, the famously large, loyal and diverse fan-base of the Wu-Tang to the burgeoning world of underground hip-hop, so Vol. 2 seeks to expose another untapped resource of underground talent, skill and artistry to this very same avid and intrepid fan-base.

The project serves a double purpose as well: many of the pioneers and practitioners (DJ's and producers) in the Dubstep world came up in a time when Wu-Tang ruled the international airwaves. Unlike much commercial hip-hop, the immediacy of Wu-Tang's sound spoke to many outside of the scope of the typical hip-hop fan, across oceans and at home. Their music and style helped to shape an emerging artform that hadn't yet defined itself. Now, in 2009, as dubstep continues to grow, expand and encompass more styles and subgenres, the Wu-Tang sound is reintroduced into the mix, to spawn a new and unique musical crossbreeding, that is greater than the sum of its constituent parts.

This groundbreaking album is trail-blazing the collaboration between Dubstep and Hip-Hop, with stomach-pounding, bass-thumping guttural beats, and gully, gritty and grimy lyrics that break into the next decade in the chapters of each respective genre's history. With Scuba, Parson, Trillbass, Dakimh, DZ, Rogue Star, Stenchman, Datsik & many more producing not remixes, but complex re-interpollations that include a veritable goldmine of Wu-Tang verses from the vaults that feature Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, RZA, GZA, Method Man, U-God & Masta Killa, Wu affiliates Killah Priest, Bronze Nazareth, Prodigal Sunn, Solomon Childs, Son One & more, and guest spots from Busta Rhymes, MF Doom, Pimp C, Three 6 Mafia, Ras Kass, Vast Aire, Canibus, Lord Jamar & many more, this one of a kind compilation is at the forefront of an emerging cultural and musical blend that is taking place on the margins of the mainstream, but will be talked about for years to come....

FUCK YOUR LAW!

Sometimes you just have to say enough is enough, break free of the chains and live your life the way you see fit, as long as it's not at the detriment of others I truly believe as human beings we own this right. Beyond the control of any government, religion or social acceptance we should still retain this right.

The attitude towards marijuana is nothing short of neanderthal to me, it grows naturally, it's part of natures design yet the use of it continues to be marked as an illegal act. You become a criminal by smoking a plant that grows naturally from the earth., surely I'm not alone in thinking that this is insane and an extreme abuse of our basic human rights. The powers that be obviously have there reasons, you can find thousands of points of views on this subject, but thats not my intention here. It's gone way beyond asking why do they continue to persecute and indeed prosecute people for smoking marijuana, it's time to ask WHY DO WE ACCEPT IT? What if we just stood up and said no, we won't be dictated to anymore, there is no intelligent arguement to back up the legal restriction of marijuana, it's illegal because they say so and we are expected to just fall into line.

So again I ask you to ask yourselves WHY?

The Wizard!

When I found out Jeff Mills was playing at Basic NYC this weekend, my inner fan boy let out a cry for joy. For some reason his djing sets have always left me in a mesmerised stupor and last night was no different.

Weapons of choice - 3 decks, 2 cdjs and a 909

He worked those puppies from start to finish, layering rhythm after rhythm in a relentless fashion. Alien soundscapes that seemed to give birth to tiny grooves that evolved and grew in front of you. At one point he broke it down for around 5 minutes, synths communicating with each other in a language we once knew but had since forgotten, then the dancefloor erupted as his 909 dropped back in, like an alien invasion landing in the rotten apple.

It was amazing to witness this in the intimate settings of the Sullivan Rooms, low ceilings, very low douche factor, pure vibes. The last time I saw Jeff play in new york was at Pascha, probably the worst surroundings I could imagine so this time around everything was set up for a monumental experience and I was not dissapointed.

The highlight of the set for me was towards the end when he dropped down to just the 909, mutating the rhythm in real time. His hands were a blur, it was at this point that I contemplatd the distinct possibility that Jeff is a visitor to this planet, or maybe it's us that are the visitors.

If you have never seen him play, put it on your list of things to do before you die.

Planet Twisted - Feb 09

A small selection this month, athough these will certainly take some beating when it comes to tenants worthy of residing within planet twisted.

1) Reso 'Beasts In The Basement'

Mr Neuro Step has really surpassed himself this time, this is truly immense! A snarling monster on the rampage destroying everything in it's path!

http://www.myspace.com/corgrimey

2) Bar 9 'Murda Sound'

This one has been doing the rounds for a while but never fails to deliver for me. Dark n murky subdued energy, surging through the track from start to finish. An abomination from parts unknown, stalking it's prey with dangerous purpose.

Overcast Radio

Signed to Apparatus and Surface Tension, Overcast Radio has been building a reputation for himself within the dubstep movement, clean and crisp production venturing into the deeper realm of the sound.

You can catch him at the new biweekly 'Dead Crew Orbit' at Bar 13 in Manhattan, dropping a selection of reggae and dancehall dubs then progressing into deep techy dubstep.

Check out his latest mix, all original productions, at time of print all the tracks are unsigned...

Dakimh

I found Dakimh's page whilst scouring myspace for some new beats, only one track in the player but it carries the strength of ten. With a deep sci fi feel to the proceedings 'Done' is a master piece, a haunting vocal sweeps in and out of the expertly crafted landscape with a strong but simple beat structure underpinning the groove, this wouldn't be out of place in the new Terminator soundtrack but would perhaps be more fitting to Blade Runner. I don't know much else about Dakimh but if this is anything to go by, his/her future is bright. I can only hope that there is more material in the works.

Check out 'Done' and show some love on the page -

Planet Twisted - Jan 09

I have always been obsessed with twisted and futuristic basslines, morphing in and out of the track whilst seeming to communicate with each other, transporting you to somewhere else. Like a mystical psychadelic experience, impossible to obtain other than when it wants to be found.

Each month I'll post 5 tracks that have had heavy rotation on my eardrums, if you have suggestions to add or inquiries about any of the artists/tracks featured here, please feel free to email me(mechabot1@gmail.com) for possible inclusion in next months Planet Twisted.

Much to my delight, there has been an influx of the twisted vibe within the dubstep community of late, see below for artists/tracks that have been satisfying my appetite...

1) Reso 'Otacon'

Next level offerings from the man leading the charge! I think this is to be included in a forthcoming album. 09 is set to be a huge year for this talented young producer.

http://www.myspace.com/corgrimey

2) Nero 'Night Thunder'

The bass work on this is breathtaking and shows true class. Having already turned heads in dnb circles they have been replicating this amongst the dubstep community. 'This Way' and 'Something Else' are also worth checking out.

http://www.myspace.com/nerodubstep

3) Hellfire Machina 'Buddhafist Style'

A new project from Mechabot 1 aka Sunz Of Mecha (co owner of Mechanoise Records and Breaksfm) alongside Chosen Substance and Mikey Fx. Gathering some momentum with their productions towards the end of last year, this is the most recent track from the Hellfire dungeon.

http://www.myspace.com/hellfiremachina

4) Antiserum & Dubsworth 'Ugly Mon'

With a recent string of killer releases, Antiserum combine forces with Dubsworth to deliver something of epic proportions. Rage Against The Machine style guitar with question and answer switch bass, the creativity within dubstep right now is immense and these guys are up there with the best of them.

http://www.myspace.com/antiserumsf

5) DZ 'Awol'

Included more for it's sheer velocity than anything else, 'Awol' tears out of the speakers with intentions to destroy the dancefloor. DZ is on fire at the minute, another artist set for big tings in 09!

Chapel Perilous

Chapel Perilous, like the mysterious entity called "I," cannot be located in the space-time continuum; it is weightless, odorless, tastless and undetectable by ordinary instruments. Indeed, like the Ego, it is even possible to deny that it is there. And yet, even more like the Ego, once you are inside it, there doesn't seem to be any way to ever get out again, until you suddenly discover that it has been brought into existence by thought and does not exist outside thought. Everything you fear is waiting with slavering jaws in Chapel Perilous, but if you are armed with the wand of intuition, the cup of sympathy, the sword of reason, and the pentacle of valor, you will find there (the legends say) the Medicine of Metals, the Elixir of Life, the Philosopher's Stone, True Wisdom and Perfect Happiness.
